Zelensky’s Reaction to the European Commission’s Decision

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that this is a right step.

“Today, the history of Ukraine and the entire Europe took the right step – the European Commission recommended starting negotiations on membership with Ukraine. Pure positive. Despite all the difficulties, we are moving forward, and in December, we expect a political decision from the European Council. Ukrainians have always been and are part of our common European family,” said Zelensky.

He added that Ukraine should be in the European Union. According to him, Ukrainians deserve it.

“And by protecting European values and by staying true to our word even in times of full-scale war, by developing state institutions. We are making all the necessary decisions. Thank you to everyone who is helping!” said Zelensky.

What is known about the European Commission’s decision?
On November 8, it became known that the European Commission recommends that the European Council begin the negotiation process regarding the accession of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union, reported by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during a press conference in Brussels.

Ukraine has completed 90% of the reforms expected by the EU. At the same time, a condition is the continuation of implementing the remaining recommendations, she said. The European Commission recommends setting the negotiation framework when Ukraine implements current reforms, which will be reported on in March 2024.

“Significant progress has been achieved in the field of constitutional justice, reform of the selection of the High Council of Justice, anti-corruption programs, combating money laundering, important measures to curb the power of oligarchs, a new media law, and progress on national minorities”, stated the President of the European Commission.
